Knotwood
A single living organism grown into a barrier, opened by pressing a distant node of its own body.
Knotwood is one organism wearing the shape of a gate. A snarled mass of woody limbs seals the passage (the door-node), and somewhere apart from it sits a swollen, pale pad of the same plant (the switch-node). Press the pad and a signal travels the shared body; the snarl unclenches and the way opens.
The grounding is real: touch-sensitive plants move by internal electrical signalling rather than muscle. Knotwood takes one step past that, holding the trigger and the door far enough apart that the organism becomes architecture. It answers to pressure, not to light. In a forest lit only by drifting spores, light is too unreliable a signal to build a gate on, so this growth evolved to trust weight instead.
Configurations
- Snap (default). A single touch, including a thrown head, fires the organism open. It relaxes shut again after a beat. Move through the gap before it closes.
- Held. Mature growths hold open only while weight stays on the switch-node. The body stands on the pad, the head goes through: the region's plainest statement of the head and body split.
- Paired nodes. The largest specimens grow two switch-nodes set far apart and unclench only when both are pressed at once, sensing a creature of a certain mass spread across both pads. A detached head and a headless body are exactly that creature.
